Have you ever thought of living in anything other than a home or trailer or even a van? If so, then keep reading. You will be very surprised to know that someone would want to live in a very expensive piece mode of transportation. Through the years, many stories have surfaced about people living inside a train or anything that was used to move around on the ground. However, an airplane is definitely something outside of the box. We are going to take a look at the following story about converting an airplane into an ordinary yet not-so-ordinary living space.

A Dream Come True
Bruce had this romantic dream to convert a delivery van into a place to live in for the rest of his life, but that was before he was inspired by someone else to convert something very extraordinary into a home. When he heard about beautician Joanne Ussery, who converted a Boeing 727 jet into a beautiful home, he was hooked. An airplane was going to be his home to live in for the rest of his life.
To the Rescue
To save an airplane from being taken to the scrapyard, he bought this Boeing 727 in early 1999. He bought this Boeing from Olympic Airways, and it was located at the Athens Airport in the state of Georgia. It cost quite a handsome amount. Now that he had bought this airplane, he had to find a way to get it delivered to his plot of land in Oregon. This plot of land is located in the woods of Hillsboro in the state of Oregon in the US.
Get it Delivered
Getting the airplane to his plot of land in Oregon was no small feat, and it took a huge amount of planning to get it there. Bruce made use of local contractors from Athens to tow the airplane all the way to his plot of land. This was quite a tricky process, as the tail and wings had to be removed before it could be transported. After many headaches and a lot of determination, he finally had the airplane delivered to its woodland resting place.
The Resting Place
Many thought he would give up on the project, but Bruce would not give up until his dream had come true. He was happy when the plane was finally delivered and reassembled on the final resting place he would call his home. When the job was done and the airplane was settled, he could finally start the conversion process.
Just the Beginning
With the airplane finally at its resting place in the woods, Bruce was now able to start the next phase of converting it into a living place for himself. Without a real vision of what it would look like when he was done with it, he started the process of converting it.
A Lot Of Effort
Bruce was facing a mountain of work just to get started by having all the seats removed from the airplane. That was just the beginning of the amount of effort he was going to put into converting this plane into a home. The good thing about this is that the frame and the roof of the home were already there, so only the interior needed revamping. However, there was just as much work to be done on the exterior to get the airplane cleaned up.
The Work Goes On
When he started work on the plane, Bruce moved into a delivery van to rest his weary body after hours of work. Every night, he retreated to the van to get some well-earned rest and plan his work for the next day. Work needed to be done on the inside, as well as on the outside, and he knew this was not going to be easy. He also knew that it would take quite some time before he would be able to move into his new home.
Bruce Campbell had the vision to change this piece of flying technology into a place to call home. That is exactly what he intended to do when his airplane was delivered to his piece of land in the woods. It may seem like a lonely place to live on your own with only the large structure of the plane to keep you company, but not to Bruce! To him, it was the beginning of a dream coming true.
Add As You Go
Bruce started out adding water to the interior of his new home. Even though there was already a plumbing system in place, he needed to add clean water to the home, just like you would with any other home. This was done by removing everything that was stuck to the surfaces inside the airplane. Then, he laid the pipes for his new home to deliver clean water for those who would live in this big, steel home.
Keep it Clean
While he was busy changing the new living place on the inside, it still needed some maintenance on the outside. It is necessary to wash the entire outside of the fuselage on a regular basis, at least every two years. To clean the body of the plane, he made use of ladders to grant him access to the top, but this was quite a risky job because he could easily get hurt while he was out there all alone.
Perseverance Is Key
Despite many setbacks and the odds being stacked against him, Bruce pressed forward. He just kept on working on his dream home, and at some stages, there was a lot of pressure on him. Even after many weeks, which became months and then years, he just pushed on to get the job done. Many people would have given up after this much time, but the vision was firmly planted in his mind.
Pillars to Keep it Steady
To keep the airplane firmly on the ground and well-balanced, Bruce had to add some concrete pillars to keep it steady. This was necessary to ensure that there was a stable base, even though the landing gear was quite strong and sturdy. While this was going on, he also had to install a driveway to the plane to provide easy access to his home. This also took quite some time to complete and added to the time spent on the job.
This project seemed like it would never end, but he was eventually able to move in some of the appliances. These were placed wherever he found a place to put them. He still had to live, and all these things became necessary the longer he stayed in his new home. However, he still had a lot to fix and put in place to make it a functional living space for him.
Just Like it Used to Be
To get to the interior of this steel home, you need access to the folding steps provided with the plane. This is just like it used to be when passengers were still boarding this plane all around the world. At least it is still safe enough to climb these stairs to get inside the plane or home. However, some repairs had to be made to the stairs to be able to make use of them.
This part of the forest is known for the strong winds that are experienced every now and then, so the chances of dirt and leaves getting inside are very good. Because of this, you need to wear shoes all the time. That is why Bruce adopted a policy of wearing shoes and socks even inside the new home. This is the best way to keep your place and your feet clean all the time while working inside and out.
Keep it Simple
Life in the new home can be what you make of it, but Bruce opts for a simple and modest lifestyle. Quick meals and just enough to get by is the policy he lived by while in his new home. This was a good way to make living much more simple while he converted this plane into a dream living space. According to Bruce, this is much easier, and you do not need to keep up with the neighbors.
Take a Shower
What would life be without the means to wash off the day’s hard work with a nice warm shower? That would not have been possible without clean water and some electricity supplied to the airplane home. To get electricity to the plane, he had to dig all the trenches to lay the cables by himself. This was also the case with the water line so he could have clean water delivered to the plane.
A Livable Home
To change a plane into a liveable home, you need to make major modifications to the systems. Luckily for that, Bruce only had to add some modifications to have a workable bathroom for his daily shower and other self-care activities. No changes to the plumbing were necessary to make it a hygienic living space, but he had to add secondary water pipes to the plane all by himself, which took some time to do.
With the existing toilet in place, there was no need for anything but minor changes to have a workable system. Everything you might need to have a normal life in this home is basically already available. With a standard kitchen and toilet plumbing in place, there is only the sewage connection to worry about. This was easily done with standard plumbing work on the outside of the plane to get rid of gray water.
The Flight Deck
While the salvage department of the company stripped out most of the parts from the cockpit, there was still a lot to see. Bruce actually replaced many of the parts that were removed to make it look authentic and real. He also changed this part of the plane into his personal space where he can plan and design and read. This is like a personal space of solitude where he can get recharged and think about new plans for the renovation.
In the cockpit, Bruce can imagine what it feels like to be a real pilot in a real plane. This is a place where technology comes to life not just in his imagination but in reality, as well. It is a dream place to be for those who love planes and technology and just want to feel a part of it. Of course, it still needs some renovation to look and feel like the real thing, and this is part of Bruce’s future planning.
Very Strong Construction
Airplanes are made very strong to help them resist the onslaught of the elements, thus they are very durable. What better place to call home than a strong piece of engineering like a large airplane, especially when it has a very strong base on the ground and everything you need inside it? This is the dream living space of Bruce Campbell where he spends most of his time while he is away from his other home in Japan.
This is what made Bruce change his mind from living in a freight van to making himself an airplane home. This is the beautiful airplane home of Joanne Ussery, the retired beautician who decided to make this her home. That was after her normal home was destroyed by a storm. She was not interested in living in a normal home any longer, and this is where Bruce got his idea.
This Is How it Looked
This is what the airplane looked like before Joanne Ussery bought it for a decent amount and moved it to a beautiful place. She placed this plane next to a beautiful lake and converted it into a home. As it was with Bruce, it took some time to convert it into the beautiful living place it is now. It took a tremendous amount of time and effort to get it there and renovate it.
